How to connect a smart lock to Ring or ADT home security

Connect a compatible smart lock to Ring Alarm or the right ADT platform. Check the controller, account, pairing instructions, and alarm behavior separately.

Oct 1, 2026 — 4 min read

Connect a smart lock to Ring or ADT only after confirming the exact lock variant and the security system it supports. Ring Alarm's Z-Wave lock route uses a compatible Alarm Base Station; an ADT connection must match your particular ADT platform. A doorbell, a familiar brand name, or Wi-Fi capability alone does not establish that the lock can join the alarm system.

TL;DR
  • Ring and ADT smart-lock connections follow different platform and model requirements.
  • A Ring doorbell alone is not the Ring Alarm Z-Wave lock controller.
  • Confirm supported alarm behavior separately from ordinary lock control.
  • Keep backup entry while testing; GO Locksmith alarm integration services are not assumed.

Check the hardware before changing the account

The Florida smart-lock guide distinguishes entry arrangements. For this connection, take the exact product model and radio variant from its documentation rather than relying on its appearance.

Before starting, have:

  • Authorized access to the security-system account.
  • The exact lock model and current instructions.
  • A compatible base or controller where required.
  • A working lock and safe independent entry.

If the bolt binds, address that mechanically before pairing. App communication will not correct a bolt pressing against the frame.

Ring Alarm: establish supported lock control first

Ring's current support guidance identifies compatible Z-Wave locks and the need for a controller such as its Alarm Base Station. Check the supported model list before beginning.

  1. Confirm the correct location and authorized account in the Ring app.
  2. Use the app's Add Device area and the instructions for the listed lock.
  3. Follow the model's documented pairing action; do not substitute a reset or exclusion sequence from another product.
  4. Complete the prompts and identify the entrance clearly.
  5. Test the supported lock control while backup entry remains available.

Expected result: the correct entrance appears and responds through the supported connection. A device tile alone does not prove reliable bolt movement.

If the lock was previously attached to another controller, use the manufacturer's approved transfer instructions or obtain its support. Do not casually factory-reset a live entrance and erase its permissions.

ADT: identify your system before following setup steps

ADT+ and other ADT platforms are not interchangeable setup labels. Ask ADT to confirm the lock variant, required base, account permissions, and instructions for your actual installation.

For an ADT+ system with the supported device-add flow, published setup guidance describes Devices, the + control, Add a Smart Home Device, and Locks. Follow your current app's supported flow and the actual lock's pairing instructions; if these options do not match, stop and confirm the platform rather than guessing another menu.

Expected result: ADT confirms the supported configuration and the correct door responds in the relevant app. This is not a claim that every Z-Wave device offers every ADT feature.

Test alarm behavior separately

Locking a door and arming an alarm are different actions. Ring's current guidance states that supported lock-based arming and disarming require a compatible subscription. Confirm current requirements without assuming the basic pairing process grants all features.

For either platform, understand which credential can disarm the system before enabling that behavior. Coordinate any alarm test with the security provider's instructions so you do not create an unnecessary emergency response.

Keep a record of the approved account owner and users. Removing an alarm user, a door code, and a physical key can require separate changes.

Troubleshooting without wiping the entrance

  • No supported model: confirm the variant before repeated pairing attempts.
  • Wrong account or location: check the authorized property selected in the app.
  • App responds but bolt stalls: separate mechanical assessment from connection troubleshooting.
  • Lock control works but alarm behavior does not: check the specific supported feature and subscription requirements.

FAQ

Can a Ring doorbell connect any smart lock?

No. The Ring Alarm Z-Wave route needs the supported lock and compatible Alarm controller; a doorbell alone does not establish that connection.

Does every ADT system use the same steps?

No. Identify the installed ADT platform and obtain its supported lock instructions.

Will locking the door automatically arm the alarm?

Only where that feature is supported and configured with its requirements. Ordinary lock control does not establish alarm behavior.

Should I reset the lock if pairing fails?

Do not start with an unplanned reset. Check model, account, controller, and the manufacturer's transfer instructions while preserving safe access.

Does GO Locksmith configure Ring or ADT systems?

That capability is not confirmed. Ask the security provider about integration and GO Locksmith about the specific physical lock work needed.
